Cincinnati, Ohio – “Every Citizen a Diplomat” Is Theme of TEDxCincinnatiSalon - Thursday, October 4, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Global influencers are everywhere. They are in our classrooms and our board rooms, our businesses and our homes, our congregations and our social groups. That is because everyone has the capacity to affect change. IT IS AN IDEA WORTH SPREADING. And it is the theme of the upcoming Thursday, October 4 TEDxCincinnati event.

With their last event selling out, TEDxCincinnati – an independently organized event licensed by TED -brings thought provoking ideas to life with engaging speakers and performers. At TEDxCincinnatiSalon “Every Citizen a Diplomat,” organizers want to get people talking about the importance of cultural understanding, appreciating diversity and building international relationships…and the ability within each one of us to make that happen.

Among the TEDxCincinnatiSalon speakers already lined up are Bob Herring, principal of Nativity School, who since 1984 has facilitated 42 student exchanges with 24 schools in 18 countries; Carlos Reyes, a board member of Sister Cities International and president/CEO of Young Americans for Diplomatic Leadership; Jenny M. Buccos, who, through ProjectExplorer.org, has directed/produced 375 short films viewed by millions of students in 40 countries, is a 2012 White House Champion of Change, and is a 2010 recipient of a National Award for Citizen Diplomacy.
The event will also feature performances by widely acclaimed Bi-Okoto Dance & Drum Theatre and the Young Professionals’ Choral Collective of Cincinnati.

(NOTE: Additional speakers are still being confirmed. More bio information will be available at a later date.)

“What is truly magical about TEDx events is the enthusiasm that they spark for issues. We are all about energizing people, opening dialogue, and moving people to action,” said Jami Edelheit, TEDxCincinnati curator and organizer. “This theme is so timely. Our region has already shown the world how we embrace diverse cultures when we hosted the World Choir Games and the Western & Southern Open. Let’s keep that momentum going.”

TEDxCincinnatiSalon “Every Citizen a Diplomat’” will be Thursday, October 4, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Cost is $25 per seat and pre-registration is required at www.TEDxCincinnati.com.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of “ideas worth spreading,” TED has created TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. At TED, the world’s leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Two major TED events are held each year: The TED Conference takes place every spring in Long Beach, California (along with a parallel conference, TEDActive, in Palm Springs), and TEDGlobal is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.

TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the new TED Conversations, enabling broad conversations among TED fans; and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide.

TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

Cincinnati, Ohio – First Wave of TEDxCincinnatiChange Speakers Announced

TEDxCincinnatiChange: Global Ideas, Local Experience – Three local inspiring individuals will share their personal and professional stories of change on April 7, 2012 during TEDxCincinnatiChange at St. Michael’s Art Sanctuary located at 2110 St. Michael Street in Lower Price Hill.  TEDxCincinnatiChange is a locally organized event occurring as part of TEDxChange events happening around the globe in April.  During the TEDxCincinnatiChange event, local speakers combined with broadcasts of TEDxChange talks from other cities will combine to create a local experience of a global nature.  More Cincinnati speakers will be announced in the coming weeks and information is available at www.tedxcincinnati.com.

TEDxCincinnatiChange Speakers as of March 8, 2012

Stacy Sims is all about connectedness.  She is a novelist, playwright, entrepreneur, activist, dancer and traveler.  As founder of the True Body Project, she explores through movement self-examination and critical thinking about the body and body image.  Stacy will discuss how small somatic shifts in the way we unite our minds and bodies can transform our lives, allowing us to become productive, creative and connected to ourselves and those around us.

David Mack is living his dream.   As a nationally and internationally honored writer, artist, author of graphic novels and children’s books, David discovered how to turn his dream into reality.  His work as artist and author of the KABUKI graphic novels has earned him acclaim for his innovative storytelling, sophisticated content, mixed media painting techniques and page design.  David will present practical applications for discovering your purpose and making that purpose into a reality.

Daniel Nebert, MD is an expert in the field of evolutionary genetics and genomics.  As professor of Environmental Health and Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center since 1989, Dr. Nebert developed the Glo-Fish Project.  By injecting green fluorescent protein, or GFP, into the fertilized eggs of zebrafish, Dr. Nebert was able to determine aquatic pollution levels in reservoirs and creeks as the GFP gene responded to these pollutants.  Following exposure to the pollutants, the zebrafish could then be detoxified in clean water and reused many times over the course of their three-year life span.  Dr. Nebert will talk about the practical implications of this project and how we, as individuals, can get involved.

TEDxCincinnatiChange Host Jamey Ponte is a force of nature.  As founder of the Child Wellness Fund, he charges forward with ideas, dreams, assistance, networking and even hard labor.  Jamey launched Cincinnati’s first publication dedicated to the arts, established the first summer camp dedicated to child obesity in the Midwest, founded and supports several government schools in rural Kenya and coordinated the Second Home program which recycles durable medical equipment for needy families.  Jamey’s accomplishments continue to grow and he is excited to be a TEDx organizer for Cincinnati and rural Kenya.  He is dedicated to action, responsibility, passion and determination.

The theme of TEDxCincinnatiChange is Big Picture, small details. Over a dozen local speakers and performers will share their ideas on important issues of a glocal nature–that is, issues with both a global and a local impact. The event will not only focus on the big picture of how to make our world a better place, it will also zero in on the small details required to make those big ideas work. Participants will also have opportunities to meet with presenters, share their own ideas and see where new paths lead.  A webcast and speaker videos of TEDxCincinnatiChange will be available shortly following the event at www.TEDxCincinnati.com.
